Start with all of the generic, basic fixes.

Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

Quit the app. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button. Launch the App again

Delete the app and reinstall it. Tap and hold down on the icon until it jiggles. Tap the X to delete the app. Tap the home button. Install the app again.

If I close the app and re-open will I lose my current games?

I don't know how the game works, but I find it hard to believe that you can't close the app and still keep a current game going. You will not lose any game data if you close the game. Force closing an app is standard troubleshooting for apps that misbehave.

Thanks Demo. When I double tap home screen and then hold down Words icon it doesn't wiggle  It just goes straight to Words which says downloading then goes right back to home screen.  If I hold down icon from home screen I get the x to delete but it says I will lose all data if I delete.

You don't want to delete the app, you want to close it. What iOS version are you running?

In order to close apps in iOS 5 or iOS 6, first tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button twice.

Closing apps in iOS 7 works like this. Drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.

I'm usIng 7.1.1 on an iPad 2. When I bring up the recents and tap and hold the icon it doesn't wiggle and I don't get the minus sign. has it got anything to do with it being an older iPad?  I've tried the other recents and none of them wiggle when icon is held down.

Hi Demo. I've just discovered that in ios7 you simply swipe the screenshot up and off the page. I did this but when I try to reopen Words I still get the same result. I think the only solution  is to delete it and re-install it. Thanks for your help.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

TO finish: which buttons are the home and sleep buttons. Please help with that first.

The home button is the big round button at the bottom of the iPad that sits inset the bezel that goes around the device. The sleep button or power button, is on the top right part of the device.
