Q: transfer my itunes to external

I have an old iMac and have been recorded a lot of records and now it is time to get them off my hard drive and put my records onto an external.

I got a new macbook pro and wanted to carry my external around and use where ever I go.

How do you transfer my playlist and all the recorded records to external and them use that as itunes.ough

Can someone walk me through step by step?

I have tried several time and I get the exclamation point.

Use the menu item File (or is it iTunes?) > Library > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder iTunes Media. This will move the files around a bit so that music files end up in:

G-DRIVE slim/iTunes (New)/iTunes Media/Music/<Artist>/<Album>

and is the "current" way an iTunes library is organized.

 

Close iTunes

 

Rename the folder iTunes as iTunes (Old) 

 

Rename the folder iTunes (New) as iTunes and then option-start-iTunes again, opening the library file G-DRIVE slim/iTunes/iTunes Library.itl

 

Your iPod will happily sync with this version of your library as if nothing had changed... As long as you leave iTunes set up like this it will be easy to move the library from one computer to another.

 

Check the summary tab of some sample tracks through your library. You should find that every track is stored somewhere inside G-DRIVE slim/iTunes/iTunes Media. The files inside iTunes (Old) are now redundant copies and the entire folder can be safely deleted

    did that and the itunes window, about the song still only says itunes.

    The itunes (new) does not appear.

    Hmm, it's possible iTunes 7 doesn't change the window title to match the folder of the current library file... I'm about to leave work, but when I get home I will try to fire up an old build in a virtual machine to check. I was hoping it would prove exactly which library database you had open.

     

    If you got to choose the library as requested, and your files play, then we are making progress.

    Not having any joy with my virtual machine...

     

    Assuming everything has gone to plan however it is time for some more steps:

     

    1. Use iTunes > Preferences > Advanced to change the media folder location to G-DRIVE slim/iTunes (New)/iTunes Media.

    2. If iTunes offers to consolidate files, let it, otherwise use the menu item Advanced > Consolidate Files...

    3. Please post back screenshots of G-DRIVE slim/iTunes (New) and G-DRIVE slim/iTunes (New)/iTunes Media.

    we didnt create a itunes media  yet....

    we only created the itunes (new) and draged in the games, library, etc..

    Sorry, there's me taking shortcuts again. In step 8 above I wanted you to click the change button and create the iTunes Media folder, though you are right, it might be slightly easier to create the folder in Finder, then attach iTunes to it from the Preferences > Advanced tab, Change... button.

     

    At this point the only files in the iTunes (New) folder should be iTunes Library and iTunes Library.xml, and there should be an Album Artwork folder. Please do not copy any other files in by hand unless I ask you to... iTunes should be doing all the work of copying from here on.

     

    When you have made the folder G-DRIVE slim/iTunes (New)/iTunes Media you can proceed with steps 8, 9 & 10 above.

    consolidating the files put cds into iTuned Media???

    Correct, and that looks perfect. iTunes has made copies of the files where we want them to be, and updated the entries in the database to point to those new files. The library should now have the correct structure to survive the move to the new system.

     

    Please move the external drive to the MacBook Pro and use the hold-option-start-ITunes method to open the library database at G-DRIVE slim/iTunes (New)/iTunes Library.

     

    Keep your fingers crossed...

    Yes it will. However now would be a good time to rename the file iTunes Library to iTunes Library.itl (no full stop at the end BTW)

     

    With iTunes closed tap the icon for iTunes and immedialely press and hold down the option key. Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. If iTunes opens without that prompt, close it and try again. When you get to Choose open the file G-DRIVE slim/iTunes (New)/iTunes Library.itl.

    playing the records and the cds!!!

    Will have to do anything else?

    So when I want to update my ipod it will update from the g drive?

    Delete the earlier attempt at all of this which should be at G-DRIVE slim/iTunes

    Your iPod will happily sync with this version of your library as if nothing had changed... As long as you leave iTunes set up like this it will be easy to move the library from one computer to another.
