reinstall os problem: apple id has not purchased lion.

Dear Community:

Just bought a MBP from apple shop and physically changed the HDD to SSD.

Command+R on startup and downloaded latest OS for installation. When prompted to key in my apple ID, was given the error that Apple ID has not purchased LION.

What do i do?

Thanks!

What you bought was an older Macbook Pro that originally came with Snow Leopard and someone at the Apple store put Lion on it. Which is really a No No. You should of also gotten the original system DVD discs with the system. Which would be for Snow Leopard and the iLife apps. If you didn't you need to conteact the store you purchased it from. They should not of sold you that computer with Lion installed and they should of included the original system discs.

That was a big mistake. You should've at least created a lion recovery thumb drive. I know you're a newbie but even if you had a windows pc, you know not to change your drive if you don't have the os handy.

If you know someone with the same macbook as yours, late 2011 see if you can use that persons macbook and buy yourself a thumb drive at least 8GB and do this:

It simply can not be a Late 2011 model. All Late 2011 models came with Lion Pre-Installed and Do Not need to enter any Apple ID to Reinstall Lion. Only older Macs that did not come with Lion Pre-Installed "BY APPLE" need to enter an Apple ID when Reinstalling Lion as the only way to get Lion was to Buy it from the Mac App Store.

It has nothing to do with Firmware.

If you can connect your old drive to the computer by SATA to USB adapter you can boot from that drive. Then go to the Apple Logo and select About this Mac. Then click on More Info. It will tell you if it is a Late or Early 2011 model.

apple will probably do it for you but the chances of that depends on how bad they feel for you.

macs are great and everything could be downloaded online. but not on a blank drive.

apple will know that you purchased it from them through your serial number.

they might make an exception and make you create a recovery boot drive via their computer at their store.

That is not true. I have change the drive in my late model 2011 3 different times and reinstalled Lion on all them at least twice. Yes these were blank hard drives. Used the Online Lion Recovery system on some of them and never had to enter any Apple ID to get Lion. As it Came On My Mac originally.

The OPs Mac did NOT have Lion on it originally. It is Not a late 2011 Model.

He can check this on the Apple Website by entering his serial #.

Gotcha.

1. Do you have a external Chassis to put the old HD in? If so put in and shut down MBP.

2. Hookup the USB for the old drive and when hitting the power button hold the option button down.

3. Boot from the old drive.

4. Download Carbon Copy Cloner

5. Clone your old hard drive to the new SSD drive.

6. After the clone is done, will take a while. From Preferences, startup disk choose your SSD drive and lock it down. Reboot your MBP and should be fine.
