Can't download sample

This just started with new iPad/32 GB. Many books/samples downloaded without incident. A recent attempt to download a sample resulted in the book graphic being displayed but the progress bar shows no progress. Touching the graphic brings up the word "Paused" across a dimmed out graphic. I am unable to restart the downlload from the Store and I can't delete the sample graphic. Rebooting the iPad doesn't help. 1.68 GB free.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get out of this trap?
