Error 28 for iPad

I'm having a problem with my iPad that is stuck in recovery mode. I've tried putting it out of recovery mode by holding down the home button and power button until the Apple symbol comes up but it's still in recovery mode. Since it was stuck I've attempted to restore it but it won't restore becausre of an unknown error (28) and now I'm stumped as to what I should do. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Oh and it is more than a year old so I do NOT have a warranty.
