Jun 28, 2012 8:41 PM in response to clepereby Bob Timmons,Please check to make sure that you are not trying to install AirPort Utility 5.6.1 on your Lion Mac.
The download and install notes for 5.6.1 clearly note that AirPort Utility 5.6.1 will only run on Leopard and Snow Leopard Macs.
Make sure that you are downloading and installing the correct AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion

Jul 3, 2012 2:57 AM in response to Bob Timmonsby SWLinPHX,No, there are many threads on the forums about AirPort Utility 5.6.1 not installing on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Installation fails each time, whether downloaded via Software Update or directly from Apple's site for a manual install. Now, my previous version AirPort Utility 5.5.3 won't open either!

I had the same problem when I originally tried to install 5.6 for Lion.
I had to totally reinstall the Lion operating system and then download and install 5.6 for Lion.
I recommend that you check with Apple Support to see if there might a shortcut. (There was none when I spoke to them at the time several months ago)

Jul 3, 2012 5:52 AM in response to Bob Timmonsby clepere,Thank you Bob!
I thought I was the only one. Unfortunately I don't have the system disks, maybe I can download it through the app store. I'll see if I can do that as soon as I can.

Aug 3, 2012 10:21 AM in response to clepereby Douglas Urner,Sometimes install failures aren't really failures – they are choices by Apple to try and force us to "upgrade" or move to a different way of doing things. Anyway, it is possible to install AirPort Utility 5.6 (and 5.6.1) on Lion and Mountain Lion. You just have to bypass the installer. I did it last night and wrote up the steps, if you'd like to try it you can find them here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4172563.
I've also seen references to a tool called Pacifist that will automate the process for you.

Aug 3, 2012 6:13 PM in response to Douglas Urnerby Statman1,If by chance you have a version of 5.6.1 from a backup drive, you can rename it and copy it to ML. It will start (although) it asks if you want to update to 6.1. Just ignore the update.

That would work too.
It will start (although) it asks if you want to update to 6.1. Just ignore the update.
If the update notices bug you, you can turn them off in the preferences.
