Q: HP scanjet 8200 inop after Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade

I upgraded my 2008 iMac Intel computer to Snow Leopard from Leopard, and then did the download process to end up at 10.6.8.  After this I found that my HP 8200 flatbed scanner wasn't recognized by the iMac.  Searched for HP software upgrade to work with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and downloaded that from the HP site.  Even though the first portion of that download was successful, upon reboot to finish the install the computer doesn't follow up with the finishing steps. Tried the HP download twice with the same result.

The scanner is still unusable, and when I try to uninstall the HP scanner it can't be done because the files are corrupted and unavailable.  Used the Time Machine to go back prior to the Snow Leopard upgrade, but the scanner is still unrecognized.  Would the proper procedure for this have been to uninstall the scanner prior to the OS upgrade to Snow Leopard, and then reinstall the scanner, followed by downloading the drivers needed for Snow Leopard?  Or is there some inherent conflict with the drivers on the 8200 install disc that will corrupt the process if Snow Leopard is the OS when I do the install?  How do I proceed from here to make the scanner functional with Snow Leopard?

iMac (24-inch Early 2008), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

First look in the Printer and scanner software for Snow Leopard & Lion  link to see if that is a supported device. I suspect you will find it isn't. Then your next step is to buy a third party application, I would recommend clicking VueScan and trying them, I suspect you will find success there.

The 8200 is supported in Snow Leopard, that's why I downloaded the updated drivers from the HP site.  Unfortunately there was some sort of conflict so that now the file is corrupted and I'm stuck being unable to uninstall the 8200 scanner and start the install process from the beginning, which I feel would probably work fine.  I've looked into the HP help forums but there isn't much there for us Apple types.  My main problem now is finding a way to uninstall the scanner from the iMac, and I'm hoping someone here might be able to help.  Thanks for your input.

You will need to start over. First shut down the scanner and disconnect the USB cord from the computer. Then locate HP's method for uninstalling their software. Once you have successfuly uninstalled HP's software re-start the computer in Safe Mode (hold down Shift key on restart until progress bar appears) then restart normally, connect the scanner and follow the install directions in Printing Overview OS X Lion.

Yes, that's what I want to do, but since the downloaded HP driver file is corrupted I'm unable to uninstall.  When I go to the uninstall folder for the HP 8200 scanner and click on that it tells me that the file is corrupted and unavailable.  Is there some other way to remove all the HP scanner related stuff?  That's why I think this is more of an iMac sort of problem at this point than something that can be solved from the HP side.  And I'm just at Snow Leopard, not Lion.  Thanks for taking the time for suggestions.

I see, sorry I did not see the HP app was corrupt. You can try first running Repair Disk Permissions in Disc Utility. DU is located in Applications-Utilities-Disk Utility. After that try HP 's uninstall tool again. If it still does not work download and use AppCleaner (Google it) and use that for removing the HP app.

After a third attempt at the download of the HP drivers and files appropriate for Snow Leopard I was successful.  It may have been successful on the first attempt, but I found I was trying to uninstall the original files for the earlier version HP uses to work with Leopard, which had already been replaced with the Snow Leopard version......!  Therefore I was trying to uninstall files which weren't there anymore, and that's why I was getting the 'missing or corrupted' message.  As usual, operator error in this case, but I hope some of you might learn from my mistake.  I wish HP would have just eliminated those old files from the Hewlett-Packard bundle of folders so I wouldn't have mistakenly assumed there was something wrong with the download.  Oh well, live and learn.

Glad the download worked, but did it solve your problem? I hate HP's applications, they are so buggy and bloaty. Hardware is OK however they simply don't write good software.

I believe my first two attempts at the HP download didn't finish as the size of the downloads was about half of the successful third download.  My guess is that the process got far enough to eliminate earlier version of the scanner controls, but didn't give me the functional new set.  Yeah, it did solve my problem and is actually a more easily usable layout for various uses of the scanner, so that's all good.  Thanks for taking the time for some more experienced advice.
