Try one of the other methods..

See Q14-18 Pondini FAQ

http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

Section E here also might have some help

http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

If you cannot mount the sparsebundle it has corrupted.. but it might just be permissions.

In the end you can pull the hard disk out.. and put it in a usb cradle and run a verify of the disk .. you cannot do that inside the TC as the tools will not work on a network drive.. you need the TC locally connected.

You can also buy various tools like disk wizard if the apple drive utility cannot help you.. Disk Warrior or Data Rescue 3 or Drive Genius seem to be the popular ones.

The TC and TM should not be trusted in the way you have.. you must have a backup of the important files.. before you start things like formats.. you have to know it works.. late in the day to find this out but the news is too common that people think they have a backup and in reality it is corrupt because they never tested it.

I can only suggest you check what the tools can do.. the main data folder did mount.. that is a big plus.

Now you need to start with disk utility and verify the disk. If that fails, then use the disk recovery tools.

But frankly if the files you are after are just part of the TM backup I am not sure you are going to have much luck. If the files are important, you might be better paying the money and getting a professional to look at it.. data recovery is not cheap but you can do more damage not knowing what you are doing.

I would certainly try a tool that copies the data rather than fixes the disk.. basically you do not want to write to the disk at all.. you want to simply copy off the files. That means you need another equally large drive to use as the destination for the files. The trouble with TM is it has extremely complicated structure. And if a small amount is corrupted you can lose the lot.

I have just gone through this exercise.. same disk.. same problem.. perhaps worse than yours as the drive would not mount.. it corrupted the data partition.

I downloaded the trial version of data rescue 3 and running that I could see the files.. you need a target disk to copy the files to.. and pay for the full version.. $99.

The most popular tool is diskwarrior. I could not find a demo so didn't want to pay $99 to discover it cannot recover.. it depends.. how important is your data.

I did find you can create an image using ubuntu boot disk.. that was hard to setup though but did work. Unless you like command line stuff.. I cannot recommend you do that.. it is too easy to damage things.

So as I said at first.. get a tool. If you already tried disk utility and it fails.. that is where the paid tools come in.

Most people commend diskwarrior..

There is no guarantee .. no refund if it fails.. but have a go, I think it will help.

Or data rescue or disk genius.. but the disk warrior did seem to generally be the standard for mac.
