Why is my macbook pro running slow and I can also hear the fan running continuously

My macbook pro started running slow last night. I turned it off and waited til this morning to turn it on again. It is still running really slow when I browse through my dock or apps and everything takes forever to open, my fan is also running pretty loud, I could not hear it running until last night. Can anyone help me out?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6)

You have to be more specific than that. What is "most"? "Most" could be 8% and perfectly normal. "Most" could be 172% and seriously screwed up. A screenshot would be nice.

If it is the kernal that has gone haywire, then the fault is some kernel extension you have installed. Do you have any anti-virus software or similar? If so, get rid of it.

You can't quit "kernel_task" except by shutting down the computer.

That ihas certainly gone haywire. You need to find out what is causing this. The best way to do that is to follow the instructions in Linc Davis' 3rd reply in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3707264

The most important one is probably:

kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/ {print $6 $7}'

Open a terminal window, copy the line above to the clipboard, and paste it into the terminal. Reply with the result.

Feel free to do steps 2, 3, 4, and 5 as well. I think the problem will be revealed from the kextstat command.

Okay so I followed those steps, what exactly does this mean?

At THIS moment, I have no idea...but i am trying to see what i can find... (hopefully, a MASTER will show up and know off the top of his head what to do.)

I did not see anyone say to quit all applications and open disk utility and do a Verify Disk.

Try that, Five minutes. I will look about...

But- over a hundred here today. HOT AND TIRED is not conducive to quick clear thinking..

Why is my macbook pro running slow and I can also hear the fan running continuously
