iMessage and FaceTime

Hello. I am trying to set up iMessage and FaceTime for an iPhone 4. I have created an apple ID and set up the wifi connection but both show " waiting for activation" so when I select "use your apple ID for iMessage" but when I try to sign in it says there is a problem with my Internet connection even thought the Internet is fine for everything else. Does anyone know how to fix it?
