Can my 27" iMac hold more than 16GB of RAM

I've seen some saying my iMac can hold up to 32GB of RAM. But the manual says 16. Does it take advantage of ram above the stated 16 and I'm thowing money away? Or will it work? As long as it fits in the slots, right?

Crucial usually sticks with Apple's recommendations, but I didn't see that they actually said the 32G doesn't work there, but they did say 8GB sticks do work. 🙂

Apple claims the 2011 iMac supports at least 8 GB of RAM, and the 27-inch model configured with the i7 processor supports up to 16 GB of RAM. In actuality, testing performed by third-party RAM vendors shows that all models support up to 16 GB, and the i7 up to 32 GB.

The disparity is caused by the fact that Apple was limited to testing the 2011 iMac with 4 GB RAM modules, the largest size commonly available at the time. Eight GB modules are now available in the SO-DIMM configuration.

What year, CPU speed is your iMac?

The maximum amount of RAM depends on the Mac model year and installed CPU.

To find out info about your system,

Click on the Apple symbol in the upper left of the OS X main menu bar. A drop down menu appears.

Click About this Mac. A smaller popup window appears. This gives you basic info like what version of OS X your iMac is running, the speed of your iMac's CPU and how much RAM is installed.

Click on the button that says More Info. A larger window appears giving you a complete overview of your iMac's hardware specs.

Highlight all of this info and copy/paste all of this into another reply to this post, editing out your iMac's serial number before actually posting the reply.
