    Look in System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard tab > uncheck "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light"

     

    Then try the F6 key again.

    I'm not the OP but just wanted to say that I was having the same irritating problem until I found your simple resolution so want to say thanks so much for answering the OP! I don't know why the keyboard light was locked/not adjusting to the surrounding level of light despite sitting in a very dark room at nighttime! Oh well... Problem solved. D'oh. Such a silly thing that took me a whole day to figure out.
