Is there any reason to have I-tunes on my PC if I do not own an Apple product? Can it play PC based video files or does it convert files so they will play?

I download tunes at times and recently have started some digital editing. I cannot play on ITunes videos that will play on windows Media Player. Mine cannot be dropped into the program from desktop as is said in help.
