iMac screen: the light colors are gone to white. Not only in my windows, also in all browsers, etc. Must be a software problem, if I start up from an external disk it's OK. Possible a bad file in my User library but which one?? I did fresh install Snow Leopard, then it was OK again, but when I started some applications it went wrong again. Has anyone ever seen this?? I went to the Apple store and they could not help :-(

Screenshots do not show what you are actually seeing on the monitor.
Try holding the (Control Command Alt) keys and pressing the (Comma) key several times.
Alternately go to: Apple / System Preferences / Universal Access and in the Display section make sure that Enhance contrast: is set to normal.
I had that same issue.. I had my monitor plugged in HDMI to HDMI.. someone on the forum suggested I go from the mac mini using HDMI-DVI converter, and plugging in the monitor that way. It fixed the issue, now my monitor looks great.

In my case, it was not precisely the computer's settings but the monitor's that I had to change.
On the computer, I just selected: Settings > Display > Color tab > HD 709-A
On the monitor, I changed brightness, contrast, backlight, etc.
Basically, if your monitor is not... well, a PC monitor, but a TV (in other words, it was made primarily for TV viewing purposes) its settings will be optimized for that. You might want to try playing around with those settings.
