safari add bookmark button plus sign disappears

Safari default appearance includes a plus sign tab beside the address bar to be used to save bookmarks.

My plus sign disappears.

But it reappears when I swap focus to another application. Of course, if another application has focus I don't have immediate access to click the plus sign.

If I click where the plus sign is supposed to be I it gives me the option to save the bookmark but sometimes the file list shows and sometimes the file list does not show.

I have applied all availible Safari updates, including recently using MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.8.dmg.

Any suggestions to fix this?

I thought about re-installing Safari but that is not a quick/easy process.

Currently using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Safari 5.0.5 (6533.21.1)

Currently using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Safari 5.0.5

First, update Safari to 5.1.7. 5.0.5 is really outdated for Safari on Snow Leopard.

Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click Software Update.

If you have trouble using the Software Updater, use the standalone installer here > Safari 5.1.7

Then restart your Mac.

Then open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type this exactly as you see it here:

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

Click Go

Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.

Try Safari.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only Guest login created by Find My Mac.

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

  1. Be sure your Mac is shut down.
  2. Press the power button.
  3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
  4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

The following is my general advice for Safari users who experience difficulties:

§ § §

The measures I take to improve speed and stability of Safari 5.0.6 should resolve some of the issues with later versions. These instructions are for OS X.

  1. I flush DNS cache daily at boot - Google for Terminal command for your OS
  2. Use a very fast DNS server - find best for you with NameBench or use 8.8.8.8
  3. I don't use tabs as they consume too much RAM and slow my old Mac
  4. Turn off RSS, Fraudulent sites and Extensions
  5. Set Preferences/General/History to one week
  6. Adjust Safari Reset to clear everything except history and passwords
  7. Start Safari at least once a day with this AppleScript

Decompress the script and put it in Applications and then replace any Safari startup or Dock items with the script.

The script deletes Safari local storage and cache. It then starts Safari and activates Reset using your Reset settings. Those who wish can view the script and edit it with Script Editor.

It is possible to stop Safari 5.1 automatic refresh as this page explains:

I tried the "guest" account method but with a twist.

I created a TEST account on the first day I got my machine and have not done anything to that account. I know it's not the same as a fresh guest account but it was a quick method available to me.

The TEST account was missing the add-bookmark button also.

Again, worth a try but it didn't get me anything.

I am glad to have the "guest" method available to me for future use. I'm sure it proves quite worthwhile at times.

Thanks.

This new version of Safari surprised me. I regularly perform "update" checks and had done so for this problem. The update screen never showed me an option of updating Safari. I assumed no updates were availible in any form. Oh, well....

I downloaded the 5.1.7 Snow Leopard version and installed it. I have my add-bookmark button back.

Hurray! and Thanks!

I have only had it installed for a little while now and it does seem to be responding quite a bit faster. In addition to the add-bookmark problem, I had been plagued with extremely slow responses so this is a welcome relief.

...and now I know the "Software Update" doesn't always present all availible updates.

FYI: Just encountered the "Vanishing + Bookmark Button" bug after reinstalling the 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 in an attempt to solve another problem I was having. The Combo reinstalled Safari 5.0.5, and Software Update did not suggest that a newer release was available.

Your link to Safari 5.1.7 now points to Safari 5.1.7 for Windows.

I did successfully download Mac Safari 5.1.7 (for OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard) by clicking the 'Download Older Version' button here, a non-Apple website, but in my experience, a reliable vendor of Mac software:
