Q: iBook G4: Can I wipe the drive and re-install Leopard?

A PC user gave me a used iBook G4 he never used (knows nothing about it).

I don't have the install CD for that but I purchased a retail Leopard 10.5 box for my powermac G4.

What would be the correct sequence from start-up to finish, I never ownd a Mac Book before?

Will it ask me for a password? Please be specific. Thank you so much for your time and patience.

    Hello,

Your 10.5 leopard DVD should work fine with your iBook provided it has the correct memory and above 867mhz. This eliminates the 12" G4 800 MHz models.

You won't be asked for a password other than setting one up for your new user account once you install is complete.

Here is a guide from start to finishing on installing Leopard.

    Best of luck

    Thank you Knucklesmac!

A last question please? What is the best way to transfire only e-mail and internet and home network info after a complete wipe-install? Thank you so much for your time and patience.

    Your very welcome

The only way I know of transferring such setting would be by the Migration Assistant. That would require an external drive (either FireWire or USB) Depending on which version of Mac OS X is currently installed on your iBook G4, you could use time machine backup on Mac OS X 10.5 or Migration Assistant

Here is some information on Migration Assistant for 10.5:

You may need to apply an update for this:

    Bets of luck

Ah you can still you the Migration Assistant on your MacBook Pro.

If it has 10.6 or higher this information may be of some help to you.

The way I understand it, Walter is wanting to migrate things from his Mac Pro to an iBook G4.

No MacBook Pro has been mentioned.

Walter, is the Mac Pro running Mac OS X 10.5 now?

You are correct a MacBook Pro not being mentioned. I realized after I posted the thread that it was incorrect, However enlight of the subject... Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, really isn't an massive issue. It's more about what OS X Walter is running than anything else.

But thanks for pointing it out, it will help other who maybe reading this thread.

As I understand it, there are some troubles using Migration Assistant from a PowerPC Mac to an Intel one. I would expect it to be even more troublesome to do a reverse-migration from an Intel Mac to a PowerPC Mac.

Edit: Upon re-reading the original post, I see that the question is not about migrating data, but simply wiping the drive. If there is nothing on the iBook G4 that you want, a retail version of Leopard should do the trick nicely, assuming that the iBook meets the minimum system requirements for Mac OS X 10.5:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3759?viewlocale=en_US

You will lose the original applications that came installed on the iBook by doing it, though.
