Audio in/out port.

Hello, I'm trying to plug my guitar into my MacBook Pro 13 inch mid 2012 model. It says the port can be used as an audio in aswell as out but when I go to preferences, sound then try to look for the "Use audio for" tab it's not there.

In the apple help it says it should be for my Mac so I can't understand why it's not.

Any help would be appreciated, although I probably will be buying a USB interface soon, I just want to know why this isn't working.

It has the input tab but no "Use audio for" drop down menu. I've plugged my guitar in using a 3.5mm adapter and if I look under the output tab it changes from internal speakers to headphones.

I've tried plugging it in using the same wire and adapter to my friends 15 inch MacBook Pro, into the audio in port and it works, so it's not because the wire is faulty or anything.

This has been annoying me greatly as it's an advertised feature. I've rung up apple, explained everything to the guy on the other end of the line who seemed confused as to why it wasn't working. went through a couple of system resets and in the end they just told me to go to take it to a genius bar. popped into my local pc world today to test out their macbooks pro's on display, they had the old and the new and the new one definately couldn't switch to input either, the old one could. seems to confirm they have disabled this feature and forgotten to tell anyone, even their own staff.

Fun, fun, fun.

As is the wont of Steve & successors, they have decided that we dumb users don't need no friggin' discrete audio in port, in the same vein that we don't need no FireWire, Ethernet, or even an optical drive! All sacrificed in the altar of aesthetics so they can produce an expensive device with limited functionality for some, in the hope that the masses will swallow the red pill and flock to purchase in droves. And open a new revenue channel for aspiring accessory makers that will surely come up with the appropriate expensive USB3 and/or Thunderbolt converters.

Ain't Capitalism wonderful?

Thanks for this question/thread. I would consider it a Major Drawback not to have audio in.

From Apple store it seems for the 2012 models only the standard MBP 15" has an audio in port.

the rMBP says it's Headphone port has

"Support for Apple iPhone headset with remote and microphone"

And the same for the 2012 MBA.

So that's the only audio in for these model!? (except 15" standard MBP)

That seems terrible, especially for musicians (like OP) and also video, making podcast with better mic, etc.

I wonder if there are any adapters? Something to plug into Thunderbolt port (no?)

or plug into SDXC slot (that connects to PCI express?)

Or throught USB 3.0?

I know there use to be PCI and PCIe cards that would allow for best quality audio in and audio out...

Sorry to hear of your difficulties. I look forward to reading additional posts to this thread.

Hope there is a solution.

Buy an external DAC and use the USB ports, much higher quality as a bonus.

What DAC do you have? Or is there a model you would suggest?

When I had my old G5 I had a M-Audio soundcard; that was nice...before change in specs made it obsolete. And now...unless you get a Mac Pro you can't plug in any soundcards (right?).

Is there a device that would go into Thunderbolt, or SDXC (which connects to PCIe bus) or USB 3 that

would allow the connection of soundcards or video cards?

Humm... DAC to USB...so you could plug in guitar? plug in mics? is there a model you would suggest? Especially not just for output, but for input.

M-Audio or Lexicon, look at their offerings and see which fits your needs

My 2011 MBP has the same port, and I have found that the port/OS doesn't always acknowledge the connection of a device. I have used the Apple "ear buds w/microphone" (from my iPhone 4) with the MBP and had no real problems. Now that I have updated to Mountain Lion, and an iPhone 5, the "ear pods" (and now also the old hear buds) have the same issue that they don't always detect that they are connected. I don't know if it is related to the Mac OS update, or the new ear pods which caused the issue for me, but about 1-50 tries, it does detect the headset connected.

Audio in/out port.
