Time Capsule causes iMac to FREEZE

My Time Capsule is DIRECTLY WIRED to my iMac via an ETL VERIFIED phone line cable (I don't like wireless it's too slow and unreliable). Even so, at the end of a backup everything freezes and I can't get the iMac to re-start or shut down in the proper way - I even left it overnight to run it's course - but it still remained in a freeze. Also, the little clock symbol seems to be revolving more slowly than normal. The only way I can get it all working normally again is to use the iMac power switch to shut it all down. As we all know, this method of shutting down is not desirable.

When I'm then able to look in the Time Machine Preferences, there's no information about the Oldest and Latest backups as in this screen shot:-

Can anyone out here advise me, please?

I'd be surprised if the iMac HD or System have any problems because I do Repair Permissions regularly and I use TechTool Pro 6 to do weekly Basic tests of the whole computer. I've also recently done a Volume Structures test - certainly since the Time Machine started being faulty. The Mac HD seems to be OK as shown here:-

If you do a Web search for "unknown SIGSEGV code 0" (without the quotes), you'll see hits like this one. Are you running Adobe CS software?

I don't think that's the reason for your Time Machine problem. For help with that, try Time Machine Troubleshooting

Two side comments:

1) When posting Console messages, it's better to just copy a range of them and paste them into your forum post. (Click on the first one, then hold down a shift key while you click on the last one. Then copy the text.) This doesn't apply in your case, but if the messages are too long to fit on one line, copying the messages will reveal the message continuation lines.

2) Although it can occasionaly fix things, I think that a "Repair Permissions" operation is a highly-overated troubleshooting tool.

It seems your suspicions are right about the "unknown SIGSEGV code 0". I do run Adobe Bridge CS4, which I've used since it came out, and never had any problems using it. What can I do now? Here's a 'copy' & 'paste' of the relevant section from the Console (my Adobe bridge was not open at the time):-

The messages above seem to be those most relevant to your Time Machine problem. To research that further, I recommend the Web page Time Machine Troubleshooting.

I'm not sure that the SIGSEGV message and the Time Machine problems are related. I'd pursue the SIGSEGV problem through Adobe's support system.

Jul 13, 2012 3:44 AM in response to William-Boyd-Jr

I've found the following item, about UUIDs, in Time Machine Troubleshooting, but the final sentence says 'you need to figure out why'. I've no idea how to figure out why!

Event store UUIDs don't match naming your internal HD (or any other internal drive/partition being backed-up). Time Machine can't be sure the OSX internal log of file changes that it normally uses is correct.

This is normal on your first backup of a disk, or to a new location, after booting from your install disc or a different OSX volume, doing a full restore, after certain hardware repairs, removal of certain exclusions, or a large volume of changes (such as an OSX update).

It also happens after an improper shutdown or many days without a successful backup. It may cause a lengthy backup, so if you see it frequently, without a good reason, you need to figure out why.

I've just revised that; hopefully it's a bit more clear, and added that it also happens after a failed or cancelled backup, which is at least part of what's happening to you.

Jul 11 11:11:50 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[979]: Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonEventDBUntrustable|

The actual hang seems to be happening during the "deep traversal," where TM is comparing everything on your system to the last backup. When you do a forced power-off, that guarantees a lengthy backup next time.

As William suspects, it looks like the problem really isn't with Time Machine, but with whatever's causing the SIGSEGV messages. The last 5 in your post are from after the backup failed.

Do you see them only when your Adobe app is running? If so, that's a big, hairy, clue. 😉

Jul 14, 2012 3:36 AM in response to Pondini

It makes no difference when Adobe is not open/running, so I don't think it is to do with any of the Adobe Apps. I've set it to Back Up Now and the Console system log is showing that it's stuck as shown here - no movement from 10:51 to now - it's now 11:36 (UK time) and it's still running in 'Preparing' mode and NO Adobe Apps are open/running:-

Further Info. confirming that the 'deep traversal' is likely the problem. It seems to keep going over the same thing, but what can I do about it?:-

Jul 14 11:18:47 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[993]: Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonEventDBUntrustable|

Jul 14 11:58:08 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[993]: Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonEventDBUntrustable|

As you see, between 11:18 and 11:58 it was trying to work - It ran 'Preparing' for some time, showed 'Finishing Backup' disk image unmounted then the whole procedure begins all over again on, as shown here:-

Jul 14 12:30:13 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[993]: Deleted 1 backups: oldest backup is now 4 Feb 2012

Jul 14 12:30:13 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[993]: Stopping backup.

Jul 14 12:30:28 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[993]: Compacting backup disk image to recover free space

It's now 12:38. and it's STILL running. As I mentioned in my original post, I left it running overnight and it was still running next day and the whole computer is then in a freeze!

We're not seeing all the messages. It looks like your TC disk is too full for the new (probably large) backup. Before Lion, too little space combined with a need to do a deep traversal results in an excruciating process:

1. Deep traversal to see how much space is needed.

2. Find not enough free space available.

3. Delete the oldest backup.

4. Eject the sparse bundle containing your backups.

5. Compact it (to recover space from deleted backup).

6. Remount it.

7. Repeat from 1.

Take a look at the messages again, but filter (in the "String Matching") box for backupd -- you should see groups of messages, over and over, detailing the process.

Look for the latest message like this: "xxx GB required (including padding), yyy GB available."

If yyy is close to xxx, it's about done, so just let it run. If not, post back with a copy of that message, plus the size of your Time Capsule, and the size of anything else on it besides these backups.

Jul 17, 2012 8:23 AM in response to Pondini

31.2 GB Available; 500GB Capsule Size; Only back ups are on it. Sorry I don't understand all about your last paragraph about "String Matching" etc but here's the latest Consol info. (after the last entry it stuck):-
