When saving documents via AFP (to a NAS), I'm presented with the referenced alert. Does anyone know if this will be possible in the future? With the advent of Mountain Lion this month, documents in the cloud will be available (if I'm not mistaken).

Thanks!

I believe Versions is predicated on having a Mac-formatted (HFS+) drive. Most NAS boxes are NTFS or NFS, so are unlikely ever to support Versions. Documents in the Cloud is a separate system which uses iCloud to store versioned documents.

Thanks Matt. It's up to NAS manufacturers, then, to come up with workarounds for this. My particular NAS is Ext3 (or 4). In the referenced document however, not even network connected HFS+ shares can save Versions, as far as I can tell.

Right. I think if versioning (either Lion's implementation, or some other system) is something you require, and you're storing files on a NAS, right now you need to find a different solution for it. For example, Synology has a package called Time Backup for their DSM system. Other NAS manufacturers may have other solutions.
