10.5.8 is Leopard
To upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6, you need to purchase the Snow Leopard DVD, if you Mac is meets the hardware requirements.
Allan
You are using Leopard. You can upgrade to Snow Leopard (29$), Lion (29$) or Mountain Lion (19'99$), but you must check the requirements of Snow Leopard and Lion and Mountain Lion
To get information about your Mac click the apple (screen top left) and select About this Mac. This will give you your OS number. Then click More Info to see which Processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above as they are Intel only. You can discover more about various Macs at: http://www.apple-history.com/
The OS numbers and names are:
OS X 10.4.x - Tiger
OS X 10.5.x - Leopard
OS X 10.6.x - Snow Leopard
OS X 10.7.x - Lion
OS X 10.8.x - Mountain Lion
If you have an Intel Mac it is well worth upgrading to Snow Leopard now and then considering other options after that.
You can buy Snow Leopard here:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
For details about upgrading this to Lion or Mountain Lion see:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD256Z/A
In each case check that your Mac complies with the requirements.
If you are not in the US you should use the Change Country link at the bottom of the page.
Hello, I am looking to upgrade Leopard to Snow Leopard, I have an Intel Mac. But that link no longer works - it looks like I can't get Snow Leopard on the Mac Store anymore? (Mountain Lion was just released.)
Anyone know how to get Snow Leopard now?
thank you!
Hello, Apple removed it from the Stores, online & otherwise, but if you call Apple Sales I understand you can still order it.
I personally think Apple is about to enter a downward spira with their policiesl. 😟
I will try that. thanks
Thank you for your very informative advice, but something very strange is happening. I have just tried the link for 10.5.8 as you recommended, and it said the page is not available. Have they stopped anyone upgrading. I am stuck in limbo, I cannot upgrade. I have had serious problems and need to get up to date. Thanks
You will find free combo updates for OS X 10.5 here:

Ring Apple if you wish to purchase Snow Leopard.

Hi Neville,
I went onto your first link, but I can only find a combo update for the version I have (10.5.8) and no higher. Is the next one 10.5.9 or 10.6? either way, I cannot see it. Please could you take a look for me and see if I have missed it. Sorry to put you to trouble.
By the way, I am in the UK.
10.5.8 is the latest Leopard update - it is what I use.
If you have Software Update enabled it will ensure you are up to date.
Yes I have got the software update enabled. I am a little confused though. I thought I had to move up to mountain lion in order to keep my mac up to date. When I tried to buy mountain lion, I got a message up saying that I had to have 10.6 or above to get mountain lion. Am I ok to stay as I am then?
If you have serious problems, they should be fixed first before you upgrade.
If you wish to upgrade, you need to check out what version of OS X your Mac is capable of supporting.
Once you have fixed the problems and know what you Mac can support, the next step would be to purchase the Snow Leopard DVD and upgrade to it.
Then update to 10.6.8 once there the next step depends on what your Mac is capable of running.
Before starting any of these steps you should backup your data.

Thanks Allan,
A couple of months ago I had a situation where everything on the computer kept staling and my Chrome kept cutting out. I tried the usual things like clearing cache, cookies etc, but nothing worked. I ended up getting Mac Keeper to see what was wrong, and found out I have viruses and trogens. Anyway, that has been sorted now, I have mostly have problems with pages 'snapping' at the moment.
How do I find out what version of OS X my Mac supports please
MacKeeper is one of the worst pieces of software you can put on your Mac. Everything it does can be done for free with out utilities and much more safely.
I highly recommend that you remove it.
I have no idea what you mean by Pages snapping.
