Genius Bar is free, but you will have to pay if they have to repair something and it's out of warranty

Not exactly. They will replace your iPod on the spot with a refurbished equivilant model for a price ($99, $149 or $199 for the 8g, 32g or 64g iPod).

Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.

If covered by warranty the exchange is free.
