icloud server not responding back to my mac

Back to My Mac worked in Snow Leopard, now when I check back to My Mac in Icloud settings I get the errort message "server not responding" and it tells me to switch it off and wait 15 seconds before turning it on again. Does not help

Apple support pages have no more suggestion than this. The rest of Icloud works fine, just Back to My Mac that is gone

In Keychain Access, when I do a search in the upper right for "apple" there are some keys and certificates with "Apple ID" in the name, but not specifically Back to My Mac. Looking at their Access Control tabs, these keys are used by AppleIDAuthAgent - the Apple ID authentication core service - as well as some other processes. For those still having trouble logging in, perhaps these items are also gumming up the works. If you delete them, I'd advise backing them up first by choosing File->Export Items just in case I'm horribly wrong and you need to import them again later. I'm sorry I can't be as helpful with this, as the original problem behavior has gone away in my case and I can't reproduce it to test.

Maybe poke around in ~/Library/Application Support/iCloud?

I have an Accounts folder in there, which contains a file with a numerical filename, and an alias to it whose filename is my Apple ID email address. Maybe try signing out (if you're signed in), moving that file with the numerical filename, then trying to sign in again? Maybe that file contains something about our Apple ID as it pertains to logging into iCloud, and has been corrupted for you.

I'm grasping at straws, though.

There may be an easier and better solution!

I have a situation where I have Mountain Lion on one machine and Lion on another. Deleting the Keychain items mentioned above did not help. Apple support asked me to run software update on the Lion machine. They said the flashback malware update and regular updates took care of some situations where Mountain Lion and Lion machines were not able to connect together.

Sure enough, after installing the update on the Lion machine and after turning off and turning back on Back to My Mac of the Mountain Lion, machine all works again.
