What does the three-tone error message mean?

Trying to re-install Snow Leopard on a 17-inch MacBook Pro (early 2010).

I have erased the HD and cannot boot from the Snow Leopard install DVD.

I start and hold down the C key...does not get past the gray apple logo and THREE TONES sound...no further bootup.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

three beeps usually means a problem with ram. You may have faulty ram. Take it too the Apple store for repair. Also if you can do it on your own open up your MBP and try pushing the ram in because it may just be loose. Opening your MBP may void warranty.
