Security of syncing over wi-fi?

It would be nice sometimes to sync the phone with the computer over wifi, but I'm quite concerned about security for work and personal data. On my home network, I've got my WPA2 which appears to be sufficient, but I'm worried about the following scenario: I'm at an airport or an internet cafe, connect to the free public wifi for some not-private web browsing, and my phone and computer decide to sync over the public network. Is my data open or encrypted to the view of someone else on that network?

The phone is set for backups to be encrypted on my computer, and my user directory is encrypted on the computer as well.

This is a laptop with both connected to the same wi-fi network?

If so, you may want to avoid syncing your iPhone over the air when both are connected to free public wi-fi network. I have prevent iPods, iPads, iPhones from syncing automatically when connected via my iTunes preferences so I must manually select Sync.

In regards to backing up your iPhone via an available wi-fi network if you are doing this with your iCloud account, I'm pretty sure the upload to iCloud is encrypted but you can prevent your iPhone from doing this as well when connected to a free public wifi network.

This would be with both on the same network--I've definitely been in situations, where traveling, where I turn on the phone, find some free wifi, check something online, then later have a minute to pull out the laptop--and if they were set to automatic sync, that would potentially be a problem--IF the data is transmitted in the clear in the wifi sync. But I haven't found a definitive answer as to whether the transfer--computer to phone when connected to the same wifi network--is encrypted. This is NOT referring to 3rd party apps that require wifi sync, or to iCloud, but rather to mail message and contact info in address book that need secure handling.

Emails are synced with a server with an Exchange or IMAP account, not with a POP account. Most email accounts use SSL for their incoming and outgoing mail servers - my company Exchange account does as well as my iCloud account, so very little concern there unless the account does not use SSL for the incoming and outgoing mail servers. I thought this was a question about syncing youriPhone with iTunes on your computer when both are connected to a free public wifi network. I would avoid doing so.

It is a question about syncing iPhone and iTunes over wifi: the question is, does the default wifi sync process encrypt the data between phone and iTunes?

If it does, I'm less worried about the possibility of accidentally triggering a sync over a less-than-secure network. If it doesn't, than I shouldn't set up wifi syncing. I can't trust myself to always be aware of whether syncing is on or not.

I am concerned about the security of other things synced besides mail messages, such as calendar entries that contain protected information, or private phone numbers in contacts.
