I just updated my iTunes. The sofwtware version is 1.2. I don't know what you mean by format, but all my songs were purchased off of iTunes, not downloaded.
iTunes can play anything you purchase off iTunes Store, but these songs may not be compatible with your old
iPod software 1.2.1, ( 4th Gen iPod),
Refer to thisApple Support Article on iPod compatible song format.
Select a song ->Get info and you will see the song format and quality(sample rates)
You can also convert those high quality song to iPod compatible.

Unfortunately, you cant update the software for your iPod, as it is the latest fot that 4th Gen model.
NONE of the songs on my ipod classic will play! I've tried resetting, resyncing, and restarting. They play on my iTunes, but not on my iPod. Also, my videos won't play either.
