Q: Move playlists from iPhone to iTunes

I accidentally deleted my iTunes playlists but they are still on my iPhone.  How can I copy them to iTunes on my iMac?

Apparently they are not there. This is the problem OP and I are facing. That was our question when we asked, how can sync or import it so it appears there.

Edit: those are all the default playlists. from the images I have seen, playlists usually is denoted by a different icon, one with bars and a musical note.

So you have other playlists you can see in the Music app on your iPhone?

Yes. They are smart playlists. The gear icon indicates this.

There are 2 kinds of playlists. Smart playlists have a gear icon, regular playlists have the musical note.

Yes, this is the issue we are facing, only smart playlists are synced. Yes, I do have playlists on my iPhone that is not appearing in my iTunes. I guess its an issue that is different from most others who are viewing this thread even though we are all asking how we can import playlist from phone. Because for us (OP and I) if the playlist is not syncing, we wanted to know how we can manually import it into iTunes.

Until now, no one has stated that they can see playlists on the iDevice but not all playlists the iDevice are showing.

The OP did not understand what I wrote and used Senuti to copy playlists from iDevice to iTunes.

I believe it was not that OP did not understand your instructions but it did not make any sense. It was the same for me as well when I first tried to follow the steps. OP had resorted (to what I know) a third party programme which I am hoping not having to. Because we do not see the our playlist on the iTunes, we assumed we had to transfer it manually, and exporting it from iTunes wouldn't have made any sense then since we couldn't see it. Guess it is some sort of bug/error, wouldn't matter how many times I sync, the lists would not appear.

    Okay.

It made so much sense that like 12 other people after that understood exactly what I wrote.

The OP made no mention of not seeing any playlists anywhere. Just that she thought I had it backwards (moving playlists from iTunes to iPhone).

and others replied also they did not know what the OP was on about.

Have you tried Senuti (or other program) to get these playlists from iPhone to iTunes?

Nope, do you recommend that? I read on Senuti's site its for Mac, I'm on Windows.

I tried a few apps a few years ago but nothing recently...

Turingtest2 (who posts in these forums) has written a script which can pull in playlists.

    -> http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/scripts.asp#ImportDevicePlaylists

Also, he wrote this article (which has a link to the above)

-> Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device

That did not work as well. Thanks for your help anyway. You've been really helpful.

Hi Chris, so I tried the script and it did not work for me. I've also tried several of the third party programmes on the second link. TouchCopy worked for me. It was able to detect the playlist on my phone and I exported it onto my desktop, and followed your initial steps (File > Library > Import Playlist) and I now have them on my iTunes. Kudos!

Could you possibly make a version of this script that works on Mac as well?

I had a huge iTunes library on my external hard drive, and one day the hard drive got corrupted so I had to recover the data, wipe it clean, and then put the data back on there. Unfortunately, the folder with all the original music files survived, but the actual folder containing the iTunes library did not, so I had to make a new music library on the external, and based on what I've been reading in this thread, my playlists (that I just recently 'exported' off of an old iPod that still had them) won't work when I re-import them...but your script might be able to fix that.

    Help?

So you are now making regular backups of yoru external drive, correct?

Time Machine is dead simple to use.

    Plug it in.
