There isn't a setting to change. Something isn't quite right.

Are the mail accounts going offline? If you Show the Mailbox list, you will see a circle with a ~ symbol in it if the account has gone offline.

Are all the accounts set to include when checking for new mail in the Advanced tab of Account preferences in Mail?

When you experience this, open Connection Doctor from the Window menu in Mail.

See if it can connect to the email servers.

No They are not going offline

in the advance tab it shows charter.net which is my Internet provider

in connection doctor charter and Icloud with no problems

I guess im not explaining it well in the upper left corner there is the envelope icon tab it to check

you get a circle motion for less than a second no email found

if i close my email and reopen my email it will search for new email and i watch the circle motion of a icon the icon spins for a few seconds and new email is found

my question is can i change the length of time it take to search the email servers ?

That's great. Is the checkbox selected that says to check that account for new mail each time?

in connection doctor charter and Icloud with no problems

Then it is likely that your connection settings are correct.

I already answered that. There isn't a setting to adjust that. It is trying to connect and doesn't get anything.

You need to look into the details of the connection doctor to see if it is actually connecting to the email server and what messages it is getting in response. If it says that there is stuff to get, but Mail is disconnecting, then you might try resetting all your account settings and see if that will tringger it to behave.

I've had this problem too. If it's the same as mine, connection Doctor won't tell you anything you don't already know. With me, Mail doesn't reconnect after I wake the mac (sometimes). Then I have to quit it and restart it.

I've had discussions with Apple engineers about this. They say its not a bug, so it must be a 3rd party conflict. Dropbox may be an issue, but I'm not willing to sacrifice that for Mail.

At the moment, I just remember to restart Mail when I wake the mac, but you might try Mozilla's free mail client Thunderbird as a substitute for Mail and see if it avoids the problem.

Hi all

I am having a similar problem and its only happened after upgrading to Mountain Lion. When using Lion, I had no issues with mail reconnecting after sleep mode.

Basically when I disconnect from the Wifi and then reconnect, I can't get Apple Mail to reconnect to my email accounts. In terms of disconnecting from the Wifi, it is like after I lock my computer and it goes to sleep etc.

In Apple Mail, there are exclamation marks next to my 4 mail account (all my mail accounts are hosted on Gmail using IMAP). Before upgrading to Mountain Lion, I would just press the "Get Mail" button and it would reconnect and check for emails. But after the upgrade, pressing the "Get Mail" button does nothing at all, right clicking the mail account and "synchronise" or "take online" doesnt do anything, double clicking the exclamation mark does nothing etc.

The only thing that allows me to get the emails checking is restarting the Apple Mail program and things work fine... until it goes back to sleep...

Any ideas?

Thanks!

O

We could probably figure this out between us. As I said earlier, Apple Eng' don't seem interested.

These are the 3rd party apps I have running when this issue occurs:

Total Spaces

Better Touch Tool

CheatSheet

DropBox

GeekTool

SmcFanControl

I think that's it. One of these is causing the problem, but I haven't really bothered to nail it down as to which. Anyone not running ANY of these apps and still getting the problem?

I have Googled and tried to find anyone else having this issue since upgrading to Mountain Lion but it does not seem to be the case i.e. it seems like its just me! I am pretty certain it has somethign to do with upgrading to Mountain Lion because it happened immediately and only after I upgraded.

In terms of 3rd party apps that I have running when this occurs, the only one that we both have running is DropBox. I tried closing the program but it didn't fix the issue?

Its really annoying! I mean its a simple fix in the sense that all I have to do is close the program and open it again but still annoying.

It must be dropbox, I came in search for this problem and as soon as I saw dropbox I thought it must be the case. However, mail tends to run pefectly most of the time, Mountain Lion - I just upgraded too. I have temperamental Mail like you guys too though, just for the side info I also have SoundSource and Twitter running but I'm pretty sure its DropBox

where has everyone disappared too?

Anyway I noticed somethign which may help someone help me solve this issue!? For the past few days I have been staying at a different location and i.e. connecting to a different wireless connection. Guess what? The issue with Apple Mail was no problem!!!

So I'm thinking it may have something to do with the modem/router? The one I am using which is giving me the problems is knows as a Bob2 supplied through iiNet in Australia. http://www.iinet.net.au/hardware/bob/

Its (kinda) nice to know that the issue is contained... not to work out what it is!

I've had the same issue (I think!). Apple Mail was frequently unable to receive mail from either an Apple or a Google mail account. Sometimes multiple times a day. The fix was always to quit and restart Mail. Much troubleshooting was done with the iiNet techs with no good result. My solution for now ... swapped out the BOB2 modem/router for an old Belkin F1Pl210ENau ("VoIP 1 Port Wired Gateway") and voila. Rock solid for weeks now.
