Copying DVD to desktop

I have a dvd that I copied to my desktop using disk utility. It's a .cdr file and a DVD/CD-R Master image. I can't view it or hear it though the image seems to have all the files of the original dvd.

Do I need other software or have I made an error in copying the dvd?

Thanks

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4), late 2009

Play movie files from your hard disk using APPLE DVD PLAYER...

DVD Player can play a DVD movie file directly from your hard disk. If you’ve created a DVD project of your own (using applications such as iDVD or DVD Studio Pro), you can preview it before you burn your project onto a DVD.

Choose File > Open DVD Media.

Navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder that contains the movie file you want to play, and then click Choose.

Play the movie.

You can’t copy and play video folders from DVD discs with copy protection.

If it's a dvd master image (which a cdr is) then burn your own dv with Disk Utilityd and then use any number of dvd players (even apple's).
