iBooks Author: About HTML widget creation

The HTML widget in iBooks Author supports Dashboard widgets, which are HTML 5 packages with a .wdgt file extension. For example, the Calculator Dashboard widget that is part of OS X Lion works well in iBooks Author. It is located on your system at /Library/Widgets/Calculator.wdgt.

There are several editors that can create Dashboard widgets, including Dashcode, which is part of the OS X Developer Tools. Learn more about creating widgets with Dashcode.

Note that widgets created with Dashcode's defaults will not run if deployed in iBooks even though they run in Dashboard. Moreover, many of the Apple-supplied controls in Dashcode fail in iBooks, and the default widget structure created by Dashcode (such as the Info button) cause problems in iBooks because they interfere with event delivery.
