iCloud server not responding

However, it did not work for me until I REBOOTED IN BETWEEN Steps 6 and 7.

Apparently there is more running the background than whatever unchecking that box does, and the latter has to be taken down before it's safe to bring things back up.

Once I added that reboot, I re-checked the box, and everything started working.

Thank you, I have no idea where applications/utilities is to access keychain. I searched for it, all I get is the App Store or iCloud. In iCloud there is a keychain box to uncheck but no details.

This didn't work for me. What's odd is that I have one of my clients on this machine working fine with another iCloud account. So client "1" with one iCloud account but client "2" does not work with a different iCloud account.

Same here. MacBook Pro 17" 10.7.4 and MacBook Air 10.7.4. Neither can access Back to My Mac even though both were accessing it fine a few days ago.

Same with me. My MacBook Pro gives me that server is not responding. I have re-started everal times to no avail.

This is why I really hates to be an Apple user. When you get used to one product, they then change to a newer one. You not only have to upgrade your existing product, but also you have to suffer from many other headaches coming with the new product. SOmetimes I wonder whether this is how Apple makes its money.

Here's someting crazy. While at the office and unable to connect to Back to My Mac, I noticed my home computer showing up under Shared. I shared its screen (successfully), opened System Preferences, and saw the error message we are all seeing.

It seems to be a logon issue. When I got home and tried connecting from my home computer I again got the message that the server is not responding. It seems once you log off from Back to My Mac (or put your computer to sleep), you then have the problem of not being able to connect.

I was having the same problem but found a solution that worked for me.

1. From the iCloud System Preferences pane, uncheck the Back to My Mac checkbox to turn it off.

2. Open the Keychain Access app (in Applications/Utilities).

3. Click the "System" keychain (You'll see keychains near the upper left of the app window).

4. Make sure "All Items" is selected in the "Category" box below.

5. In the results showing to the right, look for any key whose "Kind" is "Back to My Mac key."

6. Delete the key(s), authenticating with your password to do so.

7. Back in the iCloud System Preferences pane, re-check the Back to My Mac box.

At this point, Back to My Mac started and the "server not responding" message did not appear.

I'd tried unchecking and re-checking several times before to no avail. I hope it works for everyone.

Maybe the keys we had were tied to MobileMe and became invalid when MobileMe shut down?

This tipp solved the problem for me too.
