i burned myself because i touched the small part at the front of the adapter which is connected to the macbook. Do i need a new power adapter or can i fix it myself?

Do not try repairing the power adapter yourself. It does not have any user serviceable parts. If it is still under warranty or the computer using it has an active AppleCare plan, call Apple at the appropriate phone number on this page. Otherwise you will need to purchase a new adapter. You can do so here on the online store or at any Apple retail store or most dealers.

Check through the MagSafe Troubleshooting articleand see if anything is obviously wrong. If nothing appears wrong, you would do best by taking the computer and adapter to an Apple genius bar and have the techs check to see if here is a problem with the charger or the computer internal charging circuitry causing the MagSafe to overheat.
You can get a new third party power adapter on eBay for about $20

The link saved me about $60. Both the Apple and the Ebay products are made in China. The Ebay one comes with a 3 year Warranty. No wonder Apple stock is so high. 😁
