Daisy Chain to a Non-Thunderbolt Display?

Hello - I bought a MacBook Air in June. I've since tried to daisy chain my macbook air to a Thunderbolt display to a non Thunderbolt display. But, the second monitor doesn't light up. Am I doing somethign wrong? Does the MacBook Air support 2 monitors when one is not a Thunderbolt display? Or, does Apple only allow 2 thunderbolt displays.

Thanks!!

According to the chart in this,

Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

a mid 2012 can support two TB monitors. And then there is this restriction,

Displays: Mini DisplayPort display must be last in a Thunderbolt chain

But I think there are some problems chaining non mini-displayport displauys to the TB monitor. What kind of connection is that non-TB monitor?
