I have columns of numbers that I have designated different colors.
Is there a way to build a formula that will add all the numbers of a certain color? For example, in a single column that contains red, green and blue numbers, is there a way to add just the red numbers and ignore the rest?

the only way I can think of is to add an new column that contains a designation corresonding to color:

No. You can choose, using SUMIF or SUMIFS, to include specific cells in the sum based on the content of those cells (or on the content of other cells), but not on the format of the cells or their content. Color Fill is a format applied to the cell; Text color is a format applied to the content of a cell (as is bold or italic).
What determines the colour applied to the numbers?
If the decision is based on the number itself, or on the contents of another cell, then it may be possible to use the same facts to construct a formula that determines their inclusion in a sum.
