I have a Mac Pro that is about 5 years old. I have an ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB. When I tried to download FCP X I got a message stating that my graphics card was not suitable - Is this so, and if so, what would you recommend.

Your MP is very old in computer years and even with the correct card it may well be unsuited to FCP X.
Unless cards are very cheap it might be better putting the money towards a new iMac.

I am running a Mac Pro 1,1 (older than yours) , Lion 10.7.4, with an ATI Radeon HD 5770, that runs FCPX with no problems.
