Q: My Time Capsule has quit backing up - now spends all it's time "preparing".  I've tried the Apple suggestion of a reset which does not help.  All indicators seems to be OK.  Running OS 10.5.8 on G4 Powerbook, Time capule is 1st gen I believe.  Any ideas?

    Hello,

Have you tried to repair the permission on the time capsule drive?

Here is a guide on how to do that.

    Hello,

Thanks for your message, I have attempted to repait the permissions as tou suggested.  The first time this produced a long list of exceptions and took quite a while, however although it said "Permissions repair Complete" when I ran it again there were still about 20 exceptions, I have repeated the procedure and this is unchanged.  The Time Capsule now does not spend hours "Preparing", but the backup attempt fails after a few minutes with the error message "The backup volume could not be mounted."  Any further ideas would be appreciated.   When I use Disk Utility I can't see the Time Capsule volume, if I could I'd be tempted to re-format it and start from scratch.

    Hello Richard,

This what eventually happened to me with my external iomiga drive I was using for a time capsule.

The only thing I could do was format the drive and then set it up again via time machine. Very frustrating really as I lost a years worth of backups. This did prompt me to backup on two iomega drives, One was physical file copies and the other was via time machine.

    Best of luck

    Hello,

Well I think I have tried everything and have have come to the same conclusion as you - so I've deleted everything on the drive, set it up and started again.  This seems to be working as it is now working through the backup.  At the end of the setup procedure it did report that it had fixed a communication problem - pity it did not discover that before!  What with this and ther issues I've had I'd have to say I don't find the Airport/Time Capsule one of Apple's more impressive products!  Thanks again for your suggestions.

Communication problem how strange, but agree. Why didn't it pick that up before and save you a lot of bother having to do a clean setup. I am pleased its working for you now Richard.
