Problem with QT 7 Pro: Can't change export settings

I have QT Pro 7.6.6 installed on a system running 10.6.8. When I try to export a file as a Quicktime movie, the setting button doesn't do anything. I doubt anyone will be able to reproduce this, but here are the steps:

- Open a file with quicktime 7

- Go to File > Export...

- Change the Export dropdown menu to Movie to QuickTime Movie

- Click Options…

- Under Video click Settings…

That's it. When I click Settings in that last step, the button changes color to indicate that I've click it, but nothing happens. The other buttons (filter, size, settings) on that same dialog box work.

As I said, I don't believe anyone will be able to reproduce this, but what I'd like to know is are there any pref files or other files that I can trash to see if it helps? I've already deleted my quicktime preferences, and that did nothing. Any other suggestions I can try?

Also, this post seemed to have the same issue, but it was never resolved.

I don't have an answer or a solution to your problem, I only have a suggestion.

Until you can get Quicktime Pro working again, there are other FREE video converters that you can use that will achieve the same result, in some cases an even better result.

Some of them include...

MPEG Streamclip

Sounds like the app GUI may be corrupted. As recommended above, you could try an alternative app. I would recommend MPEG Streamclip since it is a different GUI accessing your system's same component configuration and OS QT embedded structure as QT 7. If this app works, then it would indicate that the embedded structure is fine but the QT 7.6.6 app may simply need to be deleted and re-installed.

If you think a problem is associated with corrupted preference files, then the normal approach would be to change user accounts and try the same work flow in the new user account. If the "settings" button works here, then the QT 7.6.6 app is probably not corrupted and the problem may be in one of the local user account QT PLIST files.

I've found the solution. One of the Quicktime components was corrupt. I went to MacHD\Library\Quicktime and removed all the codecs which made the setting button work again. I added the components back again in batches until I narrowed it down to one component that was bad. In my case it was DVCPROHDCodec.component. If you are having this same problem, keep in mind it may be any of the codecs in the directory causing the issues. I found the same file on another one of my machines and replaced it and now it works again.

First time I've heard of that happening. In any case, had you not found the problem the next diagnostic step whould have been to create a secondary boot drive and test it. I normally use an erased/reformatted separate, external drive with a pristine copy of the target OS. This also should have worked indicating one of the system installation files was corrupt but not indicating specifically that it was one of the component codecs.
