Can I return an iPhone I purchased from the Verizon Wireless website to the Apple store?

Hello. I purchased an iPhone 4S from the Verizon Wireless website last night but when I asked if I could switch the color of the phone this morning, they said I couldn't. Is it possible to return an iPhone bought from the carrier website to the Apple store? I called Verizon and asked about the return policy and there is a $30 restock fee even if I haven't opened or even touched the packaging at all. I would return the iPhone to the Apple store unopened and untouched. Thank you!

You can do an exchange without incurring a restocking fee:

Exchange New Merchandise

You are permitted to make one exchange. To make an exchange, return the merchandise (including device, charger, battery, instructions, and any other components) in the ORIGINAL box. All merchandise must be in like-new condition and accompanied by the original receipt. Shipping charges may apply to exchange merchandise sent to you by Verizon Wireless.
