iPod Classic 1st Generation erased all songs and content!?

Ok so I am at camp right now (they let us use their computers, but they don`t let is bring ours) and they have a rule where you can bring iPod Nanos, Classics, Shuffles, anything besides the iPod Touch or iPhone (due to internet use)

So I brought my dad`s old iPod Classic from 2001. It had about 300 songs in it (its a 16 GB) and the past few days it was acting strangely. Often it would freeze for no reason and I would have to wait for it to drain the battery, but yesterday morning it did something very odd. I clicked play and it started skipping through songs without playing them for a second and it would just skip song after song until it goes through the whole list. So if I clicked play, it wouldnt play the song, it would just skip to the next song and then the next song and then the next.

So I drained the battery and expected it to fix itself after the system restarted, and it did, but now there are no songs in it. I didn`t plug it into the computer or nothing and they are just gone out of thin air.

Ok, ok I just have two and a half weeks left until I leave camp and I can use my iPod Touch, but I`m just very curious as to what happened and whether I can fix it without using a computer?

Thanks

You may not recover the music, but try to reset the iPod following this Apple Support Article.

  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons simultaneously until the Apple/iPod logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.

If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger from one hand to press the Center (Select) button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Menu button.

When you reset iPod all your music and files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost. Date and time are preserved (unless the iPod reset itself because it had no power and then was reconnected to power). Other customized settings, such as Bookmarks, On-The-Go Playlists, Shuffle, Backlight timer, and so forth are preserved from the last time the hard drive turned on.
