iPad screen backlit but blank

I have struck a real problem with my iPad and I have tried everything to fix it.

The problem is as follows:

  1. The screen is blank but is glowing with the backlight
  2. After pushing the home button, if I slide my finger across the bottom of the screen I can here the click of the iPad unlocking but I still see nothing. I can even get music to play by double clicking the home button and sliding it right.
  3. If I hold the sleep/wake button down and then slide my finger across the area where the power off slider is, I get a brief glimpse of the power off slider, then a wiggly block of solid blue across the top of the screen (about 3-4mm high across the width of the whole screen). I then get the usual power down spinning thing in the middle of the screen and the iPad powers off
  4. When I hold down the sleep/wake button again I get a split second of the solid white apple logo in the middle of the screen which then flashes off leaving the screen backlit but blank.
  5. iTunes detects the iPad as usual and gives no diagnostic sign that the iPad is in any way faulty

I have tried the following:

  • Powering up and down
  • Complete reboot using the home and sleep/wake buttons together. This results in the iPad closing down like in 3 above and when I switch it on again (like item 4 above) I get the same result as in 4.
  • I have tried a complete restore of the iPad using iTunes. This worked fine acording to iTunes but did not restore the screen to working order.

I have this same issue. My ipad charged overnight. When I came to turn it on in the morning, the screen was blank. If I turn it on and off I can see the backlight but the screen still shows nothing on it. I can hear a beep when I plug and unplug the power cord. Have left it charging for longer but no luck. Have done a soft restart. When I plug in to itunes, it shows the ipad but when i click the ipad button, it disappears. Does not do anything.

I really hope this isn't a hardware issue because this thing is not very old. (Well, old enough that warranty is no good but less than 2 years).

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

my ipad2 is going through the same problem. backlight is on but i cannot do anything since i cannot unlock with the passcode. shows up in itunes fine. i reset the ipad but did not restore. but it looks like it might have the same outcome as OP. my nephew may have dropped it from the couch to the floor but an ipad should be durable enough to handle that. what possible solution could there be?

I am having the same issue. My iPad 2 purchased Dec 2011 is fully charged. It has been dropped in a case on a carpeted floor, but worked just fine afterwards. When I plug it up to my iMac, it displays just fine in iTunes. Any solutions other than replacing it would be great...When I turn it on...the apple symbol blinks for about half a second and disappears...then nothing. I can tell it is on, because it is back lit.
