Suddenly today I can't save my Word docs. An error message comes up along the lines of check your network connection. This strikes me as a bizarre messge for this programme. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Try fixing permissions.
Where do I do that please?
If this is word 2011 check to see if any default location has been set in word>> preferences>> file locations you may have a default location for a network drive that has been disconnected or moved such as iDisk etc.
The only entry under the area you specified was next to user templates. Yes it's Word 2011.
click on Word - Preferences - File locations - Documents - Modify
Thanks but what should I modify it to. It lists all my document folders.
modify it to the location where you want to save your files to.
now, as Gerry Brown mentions, try doing a repair permissions too.
launchpad - utilities - disk utility - verify disk permissions - repair it if errors are found and once it's done, restart your macbook
