shift + number 8 = * which is the times symbol for excel.
We don't use "*" (that's just star) or "x" [ex] in Europe. The correct symbol is "×", so the question wasn't answered at all. To answer, there is no shortcut for it. In MS Word, you need to go to "Insert" tab, then "Symbols", find the symbol and create shortcut. I use "ctrl+x" as it looks similar as "x".

Then ask in the Microsoft forums as already suggested in this 4 year old thread. Excel is still not an Apple product.

Apparently the original poster thought that this did resolve the issue as they marked it "Solved". And, the original poster also didn't say that they were in Europe. The asterisk will work in Excel. Where you'll find that on your keyboard depends on which of the many possible European languages you use.

Do you have a reference for that? As far as I know, Excel uses * no matter where you are located.
Multiply and divide numbers in Excel 2016 for Mac - Excel for Mac
Times, multiply by, is either an X or the star *. Surely you can type one of those 2 characters.
4 X 2 = 8 4 * 2 = 8
The Office for Mac forums are here as it's Microsoft's sofware you're having issues with:
You use "*" which is SHIFT-8 on the US keyboard.
