I just got my husband's old iPad 2. When I try to update the apps I get a prompt identifying his Apple ID and asking for the password rather than mine. How do I make the iPad mine rather than his?

Go to Settings > Store. Sign out of his Apple ID and sign into yours. This will allow you to download any of the apps you previously purchased (including free apps) and then update them with your Apple ID info. Unfortunately, if you leave any of your husband's apps on the iPad, you'll still need to enter his password to update them. So, I recommend deleting any of them that are free and then redownloading them under your account.

If you intend to use the apps purchased under your husband's ID, they will always be tied to that ID. Even if you change the Apple ID to your ID, to update those apps in the future, you will need to log out and sign back in with his ID.

To change the Apple ID on your iPad, go to Settings > Store and tap on the Apple ID. Sign out. Then sign in with your ID.

For the OP's sake, I think we should clarify that, if she sets up her iPad "as new," her husband's apps will be gone and she will not be able to download them under her own Apple ID without paying for them again (unless they're free apps, of course).

On the bright side, if she leaves them there, she does NOT have to sign out of her ID and back into his in order to update them. She will just get a prompt to enter his Apple ID password.
