Early 2008 Macbook Pro Hardware test 4VDC code and Support doesnt cover Nvidia replacement

Hi all!

A friend of mine has an early 2008 Macbook Pro and recently he faces this problem with the graphics... After startup the system collapses and it encourages him to run the hardware test. The resulted code was 4 VDC 1/40000003: video controller.

We've heard of an Nvidia issue of the specific model and we ve found here another thread that is refering to the same problem

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3039724?start=0&tstart=0

that lead to this

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377

Unfortunaly Apple Support (Greece) refuses to proceed by claiming that its not the GPU that's the problem but the mobo.

Is this the proper code that implies the specific issue? How can we manage with this situation before the 4 year free replacement elapses?

Model details:

MBP early 2008 15.4'' Dual Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, 2GB Ram, Nvidia 8600M GT

Thank you in advance....
