Well, no update on an existing phone can do that. It's a hardware issue.

I believe that Griffin make a FM radio that plugs into the iPhone and can be controlled through an app. But the latest reviews are not positive.

Be aware that FM reception on a phone can be very hit and miss......

I disagree with those that make statements like "fm is circling the drain" (eg modular747).

Not sure how the facts would support such a statement but I welcome anyone to supply them.

From my experience. I was led to this discussion because I was wanting to have FM on the Iphone. Reasons: 1:I don't want to use bandwidth on my internet data plans when FM is provided free. It would also slow down other things I would like to use my bandwidth for when I'm also listening to the radio. 2: Sometime radio reception is better than mobile reception in my area.

IMHO. I would like to see the Iphone with an FM capability.

You might want to read the whole thread you just posted in. This isn't only a matter of the long term outlook for analogue FM radio. There are several technical and business model issues that make FM radio a poor match for the iPhone. If Apple had any intention to include it, you would have it already (not that you would enjoy much of the result).

You could start holding your breath now, but I suggest making sure that someone who knows CPR is nearby...

I personnally would love FM on the Iphone, even if it is a little crappy. My reasons include a couple listed earlier.

1:I don't want to use bandwidth on my internet data plans when FM is provided free. (I have an unlimitted plan that I am grandfathered into but once you hit a certain benchmark your speed is choked down)

2: Sometime radio reception is better than mobile reception in my area. (That is slowly changing)

3. I don't want to have a seperate radio, just like I don't want to cary a seperate digital camera, cell phone, ipod and GPS if I can help it.

4. One of the main things I want it for is to listen to NFL broadcast that a prohibitted from being broadcast via the web, so I can't get that via internet coverage of my local station (at least not last season)

I'm not holding my breath, though. I figure if they were going to do it, it would have happened by now. Also, you never know who might jump in an give you CPR :-)

I have bitten the bullet and purchased a "Griffin Navigate" to allow me to do what Apple doesn't want me to do... Listen to FM broadcast!

It sickening me to see that I had to resort to such accessory to listen to FM radio! But hey at least it works and the sound coming out from this thing is actually quite decent. This is a discontinued item I believe but it still works for me on my iPhone 4 with iOS 5.11.

Just a little over dramatic.

Ok maybe not over dramatic but freakin' annoyed. I originally ditched my previous mobile + mp3 player/fm radio + gym chronometer + garmin gps. Now I must buy a new accessory to enjoy what other people take for granted on other smartphone... yup I'm pretty annoyed. :-)

Everything Apple does is a business decision. And, apparently, what they're doing does make good business sense, even if you disagree with it.

Then I guess you agree FM absence in iPhone has most likely nothing to do with sound quality.

I suspect it has to do with room in the phone. But, then, I really don't care. Haven' t listened to FM radio in years.
