When I plug in any headphones into it one channel is not working anymore. Also battery does not last long either. Needs new battery. Is this Ipod worth fixing and can it be do it yourself? Or time to send to the bone yard?

Depending on your model, it's $149 for a replacement iPod touch 2G, or $79 to exchange the battery, if done by Apple.
If you are really attached to it, you can get parts and tools on eBay, and Google will help you find "How-To" guides, some are even multi-media.
I repaired a 2nd gen, and its fairly easy. Just be careful with the digitizer glass. It is VERY fragile, and when it breaks the shards can be very small and very sharp...
Another thing to keep in mind is that 2nd Gen iPod Touches cannot be updated to IOS 5 or above. So if you want to do that, I would try and get some cash for it to put towards buying a new one.

Also many apps aren't compatible with it anymore with the old IOS.
I think it's fate is determined! Time to dump it for whatever I can get for it.
