mac10.58 will not boot...only world icon then process starts over. no disc. what can I do?

The Globe/World icon usually means it thinks it's trying to Network boot from a Server, try holding the Option or alt key at bootup to see if you can choose your Hard Drive to boot from.
Just to add a quick note to what BDAqua suggested: And if you can get to the boot volume that way, open up Sys Prefs>Startup Disk and set the usual startup volume.

As WZZZ says, option key selected boot volumes are not remembered.
If I remember correctly not all Macs can select a boot volume via the option key - I think it depends upon the type of firmware in use but it is worth trying.
