Brand new battery won't charge

I have a Macbook Pro 17" from August 2008.

I have gone through 2 batteries already due to the regular swelling that happens.

Once I had to get the 3rd battery I decided to buy from amazon. This battery worked fine

for two days and then would no longer charge and my laptop would only stay on if the power cord

was plugged in. After awhile I bought a new battery from Apple. When placeing it into the battery slot

the lights came on for a second and went off, then stayed off. The laptop would not turn on without the power cord

and according to my laptop the battery was at zero percent and time until full was 20:00

I left it for an hour and it was still at 0%
