I have an imac 24" mid 2007 2.4Ghz model and I am sure that I never received any restore disks with it, does anyone have these that I can copy or how would I go about getting a set as I have sold my computer and I would like to put it back to factory settings. One other question is when I bought it I remember upgrading to Snow Leopard and buying the disks, obviously since then I have upgraded again now to Lion, what happens when you put it back to factory settings does it go back to the original OS?

iMac - Macbook Pro and iPad, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

You can call 1-800-MY APPLE and request a set of original discs, they aren't expensive but they aren't free either. Ifyou're wstoring to original specs your Mac will revert to it's original OS

Thank you for your reply, basically I just want to put the computer in a mode ready for a new user, is that possible but still retaining Lion OS?

Try restarting your iMac holding Command R. If there is a recovery partition you will be able to access Disk Utility and erase the hard drive and re-install Lion. See here

Thank you Mike this is very useful and if I manage to create a recovery I assume that will put it back into a new state but with Lion OS correct?

You can erase your files and applications yes. However I'm not sure if there are legal ramifications about selling a copy of Lion that is registered to you. You should read the Apple Software License.

OK I will take a look thank you very much, so then based on that I will need the original restore disks from somewhere or Apple. I wonder if I can restore back to Snow Leopard as I still have those disks but I would imagine I cannot transfer

You can install SL, I believe you should include the SL discs in the transfer of ownership.

Insert your SL disc and start holding the C key, choose your language and when you get to the next screen with a top menu bar go to the utilities menu and select Disk Utility, erase your hard drive and select the zero data option. When it's done quit DU and continue with the installation of SL. When the installer is done you can restart but don't create a user account. The new owner will start his new Mac just as you would when you get one new.
