Q: Another Safari 5.0.6 problem (spinning pinwheel)

MacBookPro 2.33 running 10.5.8

This A.M., Safari begins to load, after 20 sec. --> spinning pinwheel until force quit.

Only this computer; others on home network with Time Capsule work fine.

No new plugins, widgits, programs.  All software uptodate.

Connect with Firefox (using it now)

Have tried:

Verified & repaired permissions.

Onyx Cleanup of everything.

Logged in as "Guest", same inablility to connect via Safari.

Restarted in safe mode and direct ethernet connection, same results.

Deleted ~/Library/Safari/cookies.

   "         Cache.db

Moved ~/Library/com.Apple/Safari/plist to desktop, same results.

Moved Library/Internet plugins               "      "            "        "       .

Uninstalled Adobe flash.

Checked with F-secure: no viruses/malware.

Zapped PRAM.

Cannot reset Safari from Safari menu but I think Onyx does that mostly with its cleanup.

5 hr. saga, I'm ****** & tired; and I don't know anything more about Macs.  Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Logged in as "Guest", same inablility to connect via Safari.

Same problems in multiple user accounts can be an indication that the startup disk needs repairing.

Launch Disk Utility located in /Applications/Utilities

Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.

Click: Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)

    If necessary, click Repair Disk.

Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks

    Checked with F-secure: no viruses/malware.

If the startup disk is ok, then uninstall F-Secure. If you really want to have anti virus software installed on your Mac use either ClamXav or Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac  Edition. Both are free.

    How to uninstall F-Secure a/v for Mac here >  http://www.f-secure.com/en/web/home_global/support/article/kba/15612/s/av.1624/p /1

Cannot reset Safari from Safari menu but I think Onyx does that mostly with its cleanup.

And about Onyx. Most thrid party cleaning utilities do more harm than good on a Mac. Your Mac runs maintenance for you > Mac OS X: About background maintenance tasks

    Well, good and bad.

Disc Utlity-->verify disc...after an hour of spinnning pinwheel, assumed it wqs frozen and tried to quit: couldn't.  Couldn't force quit either so finally did a hard power off (ugh!).

Restarted in safe mode, this time verify disc showed 'no problems'.

While in safe mode, went to Safari and erased cookies as well as reset.

After reboot, now I'm cookin'!  Safari is working (not fast, but at least working.)  Not sure what fixed it.

I never downloaded F Secure; just used their net tools.  Thanks.

    Hi Carolyn,

With all due respect; I've been using Cocktail (currently version 5.0 Snow Leopard Edition) without any problems. Is there something that I'm missing, something inherently wrong (that you know of) with Cocktail or something that you've heard about concerning Cocktail?

I think that it does a fantastic job of cleaning my iMac. In fact, I noticed quite a performance boost after using it. I paid about $30 for it & I have no motive (financial, or otherwise )other than keeping my iMac operating as awesomely as possible.

    Thanks in advance,

    Michael

Oh, just for the record, w/Safari 5.1.7, I've had no problems w/Java (not Javascript) deselected. Of course, I also  recently installed 4 GB of (crucial) RAM which gave my IMac/Safari an even greater performance boost than did the aforementioned install of Cocktail.

    Cheers

    farmdoc --

Just to be certain, did you change anything in the System > Library > Fonts prior to this problem?

Did you load on any new Extensions?  If so, go back to the Safari Preferences> Extensions > and turn them Off.

Not being able to reset Safari concerns me.

    1. Quit from Safari
    2. Remove all contents of ~/Library/Safari to a new folder on your Desktop
    3. Restart Safari and try reset
    4. Retrieve your bookmarks from the new folder on your Desktop

The following command can resolve some issues - paste it into a Terminal window and hit the return key:

rm -Rf ~/Library/Safari/LocalStorage; rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari

~Bee, no; no additions or downloads recently.

Neville,  until I did the final manipulations in safe mode (as above: deleting cookies, and reseting safari), I couldn't reset Safari as it was 'locked down' with spinning pinwheel.  So the safe mode was the avenue to success, in this case.

Thanks to all who took the time to read/advise.  farmdoc
