Horrible colors on external monitor using macbook air(2012) with mini dp to hdmi

I have one of the new macbook airs (2012) hooked up to an external monitor (Dell SR2320L) using a mini display port to hdmi adapter.

The dsiplay shows up fine on the external monitor, except for the colors and contrast being terrible. Any color grey on a white background doesnt even seem to render. However if I look at that same image on the airs screen, I can see all of the grey colors perfectly. I have tested the hdmi cable and monitor on different computers and they work perfectly. I have tried three different adapters all with the same problems, leaving me to believe that there is something wrong with the macbook air itself and its ability to output a mini display port signal.

Does anyone know why I would be having a problem like this?

I have exactly the same problem:

Laptop: MacBook Pro 13", Mid 2012

External Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster SA550 (HDMI input)

Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter: Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support (H1824ZM in the Apple Store)

Colors are generally washed out, very low contrast, very high brightness, some fonts are distorted.

I know this is a thread for Macbook Airs, but I know a lot of rMBP people are having this problem too. I'm having this problem with my new rMBP and an HP LP2475w.

I have tried HDMI direct into my monitor as well as a mini Displayport to Displayport on the monitor. My mid-2009 MBP works fine with this display using the MDP to DP cable so I know it's not the cable or the monitor. I'm also running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on both machines.

I ordered a different HDMI cable and a few different adapters. I think I'll try going from HDMI to DVI on my monitor to see if I can get that to work. I really wish Apple would fix their drivers but I really need this external display and I want to retire my 2009 MBP from daily service. I'll post back when/if I figure out at least a temporary solution.

Same problem here, Moshi DP->HDMI adapter, MBA 13 mid-2012.

The funny thing is that I've borrowed a no-name 5$ cheap DP->HDMI adapter from a friend and it works perfectly fine. Unfortunately the guy he bought it from does not have these aymore in stock and the new ones he is offering have the same problem as the Moshi adapter.

Another interesting thing is that the Moshi adapter works fine with an old MBP.

Just wanted to report back with what I finally got to work on my monitor with my rMBP:

You could probably get away with a cheaper HDMI cable but I wanted something that looked nice because I'm obsessive about those sorts of things.

The only thing I can imagine is going on here is some subset of monitors on the market aren't following some standard that Apple hardware is upholding strictly. When you switch to DVI, there is some digital conversion that alleviates the funk.

My rMBP actually works fine whenever I plug it into an HDMI TV. It's just this one monitor that it seems to have a problem with.

Maybe. Regardless, I've always had problems with this HP monitor and my Macbook Pros using Displayport.

Funny enough, I bought this HP monitor because my Dell 20" monitor wouldn't work at all with my 13" Aluminum Macbook.

Have a look at what Apple says about the VESA standard regarding adapters, HDMI, and Displayport: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241

Interestingly, my old Macbook Pro didn't support audio over Displayport or HDMI. My monitor definitely doesn't support audio over HDMI. This weird problem we're all having appears to go back to 2010 or 2011 just by skimming some forums. That also seems to coincide with when Apple started doing audio over Mini-Displayport.

Could all just be a coincidence though.

Same problem. Mac Air mid 11, belkin thunderbolt-hdmi cable, samsung lcd hd display, bad image.

I've send a feedback to apple, but they just replied "thanks for feedback" without any obligations...

I don't have a DVI input in the display. What to do? (I've read almost all discussion)

Someone told about success using parallels, but i've tried - no result (
